(The SKY ABOVE the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.)
Overview
Machine Butcher is a fictional corporation that manufactures fast, affordable enhancement implants — marketed as a fix for the fatal shortcomings of existing cybernetic parts. The work borrows the language of corporate advertising in full: promotional films, product lines, a founder, a brand world.
Note
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” This is the opening line of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. The television screen announcing the end of a broadcast with crackling static looked like tens of thousands of biosignals heralding resurrection after death. Few would have stared at it to the end amidst such a grotesque and ominous atmosphere, as if the entire world were screaming simultaneously. Perhaps the sky resembling a dead channel carried that very sense of unease. The work presented here marks the conclusion of the first chapter in the Machine Butcher series. Centered on a foundational narrative, this project is concept art that translates the characters and events of the story into the visual language of contemporary art. The world within this work is set after a war between humans and robots—a polarized society of extreme wealth disparity where cyberware enables bodily modification, yet high surgical risks and exorbitant costs restrict these benefits to a privileged few. In a world where this enhanced elite solidifies their dominance through capitalism, the unaugmented population forms the “NEO-Luddites”—an extremist pureblood faction advocating human purity—to wage terror against augmented humans. Machine Butcher is a corporation that has developed ingestible, non-surgical, and low-cost enhancement implants using nanotechnology. Formatted as a Machine Butcher pop-up store, this exhibition features the Machine Butcher main booth, enhancement parts, promotional commercials, and an unreleased documentary on Dr. Lee, the company’s founding CEO. Through this project, I aim to experiment with the grammar and syntax of massive cultural franchises. Aside from a few energy conglomerates, emerging Big Tech corporations today almost universally seek to own culture—or become culture itself. This is a core marketing strategy, and entities such as Disney, Star Wars, Pokémon, and Mario serve as the primary motifs for this work. Although their foundational mediums vary—ranging from film and video games to literature—these franchises generate numerous derivative works that are continuously consumed and recreated. In the case of Star Wars, now owned by Disney, the universe originated from George Lucas’s imagination, was subsequently helmed by various directors, and continues to expand far beyond cinema through novels, comics, and games. This world is seamlessly absorbed by fans, driving the consumption of related merchandise. Talented fans, in turn, give back to the ecosystem through fan art and cosplay, continually feeding content back into the cultural cycle.
